YMI Cultural Center Announces New Executive Director, Andrew Shannon

Dear Community:

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Shannon as the new Executive Director of the YMI Cultural Center. Andrew brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a strong background in community engagement and coalition building.

As we look forward to the completion of the renovation project this summer, we are planning to host a Grand Re-opening Celebration where you will have an opportunity to meet Andrew, although you may see him sooner as he is looking forward to immersing himself in the community.

In the meantime, we can share some information on Andrew’s extensive experience.

Possessing a degree in Business Administration with concentration in Information Systems from Winston-Salem State University, Andrew brings over twenty-five years of supervisory and management experience, effectively collaborating with federal, state, and local governments, as well as various community organizations and leaders.

  • Andrew's extensive background includes serving on the United States Commission of Civil Rights Virginia Advisory Committee and holding leadership positions in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), where he advocated for individuals and families in areas such as education, affordable housing, and equal employment opportunities.

  • Responsibilities at the Fluvanna County Office on Youth in Virginia involved directing youth services, overseeing program development, budgeting, grant proposals, and community education initiatives, including self-sufficiency training and volunteer coordination.

  • Andrew's experience encompasses program development and management, including roles as the State Director of Community Grassroots Organizing and Education, and various leadership positions in youth services and community relations.

  • Andrew's impactful initiatives include founding the Southeast Community Day Parade and Festival in Newport News, VA, drawing over 60,000 attendees annually, and establishing FEEDING 5000, a program dedicated to distributing food to individuals and families in need.

We are eagerly anticipating Andrew's strong leadership and vision for the YMI Cultural Center as we move forward. Please join us in welcoming him to our team.

We truly appreciate your ongoing dedication and support.
