133 YEARS AND COUNTING!

As one of the oldest, most unique Black Culture Centers in the United States, we are built on the legacy of our founder, Mr. Issac Dickson. Today our work focuses on the restoration of this foundation!

A New Day

The YMI Cultural Center has stood at the heart of Asheville’s Black community for 133 years—an enduring symbol of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride. Today, as we step into a new chapter, our doors are open once again, ready to welcome, activate, and honor the generations that came before us.

This transformation was a grand-scale effort, restoring and reimagining the YMI for the future while preserving the history that makes it so special. But the work is not done. To fully realize our vision, we must continue building the financial foundation that will sustain this space for years to come.

Your support ensures that the YMI remains a dynamic hub for cultural expression, community connection, and generational empowerment. Every contribution helps us close the gap from renovation to revitalization—allowing us to bring programs to life, foster meaningful dialogue, and create opportunities that uplift and inspire.

The YMI has always been more than a building. It is a movement, a legacy, and a testament to the strength of a community that continues to rise. Join us in shaping the next chapter.
