Banjul-Banjo

Music Series

The Banjul-Banjo Music Series is a quarterly program at the YMI Cultural Center that celebrates African American music traditions and their deep roots in the African diaspora. Named for Banjul, the capital of Gambia, and the banjo, an instrument brought to the South by enslaved Africans, the series highlights the cultural connections between West Africa and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Each event features diverse genres such as Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Folk, and Neo-Soul, bringing vibrant sounds and soulful experiences to Asheville. This series offers a unique opportunity to honor history, foster community, and showcase the richness of African American musical heritage.

Kuumba

Artist-In-Residence

The YMI Cultural Center’s Kuumba Artist in Residence Program, inspired by the Kwanzaa principle of Kuumba (creativity), celebrates the rich talent of Affrilachian and Black Highlander artists in the region. Each year, six artists are selected through an application process announced during Black History Month. Artists are provided space to exhibit and sell their work, as well as create programming to engage the community. Featured artwork is displayed in the YMI art gallery for a minimum of two months, highlighting the artists’ creativity and cultural contributions.

Ujima

Health & Wellness Initiatives

The YMI Cultural Center’s Ujima Health and Wellness Initiatives are rooted in the principle of collective work and responsibility, promoting a holistic approach to community well-being. Through year-round physical fitness programs—including aerobic, yoga, and dance classes—we encourage movement and connection for all ages. Our semi-annual health fairs provide access to vital screenings, health education, and culturally relevant resources. We offer ongoing wellness activities such as mental health workshops and healing circles to support the full spectrum of community needs.

The highlight of our initiative is the annual “Run for the YMI – Ujima Virtual 5K & Health Fair”, which brings the community together in celebration of unity, fitness, and purpose. Together, these efforts affirm our commitment to building a healthier, stronger Black Asheville.

Kujichagulia

Organizations-In-Residence

The YMI Cultural Center’s Kujichagulia Organizations in Residence Program, inspired by the Kwanzaa principle of Kujichagulia (self-determination), supports the sustainability and growth of Black organizations by providing free regular meeting space and monthly workshops on leadership, community resilience, and organizational development. This application-based program prioritizes groups whose missions align with YMI's commitment to empowering Black communities. Participants also gain opportunities for community service, cross-collaboration, and infrastructure development, fostering collective progress. Rooted in Kujichagulia, this initiative empowers organizations to define, create, and sustain their futures while making a lasting community impact. We are currently supporting Black Diamond Enterprises, Black Male Mondays, & Asheville’s Developing Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
