White & Wood: An Inaugural Art Exhibition

Come learn about the legacy of Charles White and his legacy of sketching as an artist who believed that art is socio-political. Come consider West African woodwork and its uses in ritual. Come consider the handiwork of newly freed Africans in America who constructed the seating at local churches, along with the YMI itself. Then, ask yourself, “how are these things from Black hands both art and a statement on our humanity?”
